HOW FIREFIGHTING AEROPLANES WORK
Aerial firefighters are essential machines used to cover and contain rapid-spreading wildfires
WORDSAILSA HARVEY
1 CALL SIGNFirefighting planes have call signs so they can be easily identified and communicated with during firefighting.
2 RETARDANT TANKSThe supertanker stores Phos-Chek fire retardant, a fertiliserbased liquid of polymers, surfactants and water, to coat vegetation and stop wildfires.
3 LARGE TANKSThe main storage tanks hold 72,700 litres of retardant.
4 DISCHARGE VALVESThe retardant is released forcefully and evenly through this pressurised system.
5 MULTIPLE DROPS Multiple discharge valves create an even dump of retardant over an extended period.
6 PRESSURISED AIR TANKS Compressed air ejects the retardant faster than gravity could spread it alone.
