CREATE AND PUBLISH YOUR OWN PODCAST

All of the gear and insight you need to record, edit and release your own audio entertainment

You can in theory create and publish a new podcast with just an iPhone. Using a selection of apps it is now possible to complete the end to end process in the palm of your hand, but to do so may result in a show that does not quite compete on a technical level with the ever growing competition. The content is, of course, of paramount importance – it needs to be interesting, as original as possible and sticky enough to keep listeners coming back through a subscription – but audio quality and flawless production also go a long way to making a successful podcast. In a format that is generally audio only, the way the audio is presented becomes more important than, for example, on YouTube. We will go through the entire process to help ensure that you can create the best possible offering with your Apple gear.

The visuals count

Despite podcasts being an audible format, shows tend to be discovered visually. You will need to take time to create attractive episode imagery and descriptions that entice the potential listener to take a chance on what you are offering. It will take less time to create all of the visuals than to record and edit just one podcast episode.

Build a brand

The very first step is to come up with an idea for a podcast and to think about how the content and the branding will work together. We cannot emphasise enough how important this step is because you will likely have to spend a lot of time working on the idea you have come up with. Ideas take time to build.

1 Lots of notes!

Find a notes app or even a paper notebook and start writing. This may sound strange, but throwing your ideas down will result in a better idea in the long run.

2 Text and audio

An app like Noted+ lets you bring text, drawings and audio together to help build ideas and create the brand you are aiming for. Organisation is key in creating a podcast.

3 Your image

You may want your brand to be personal to you but somewhat anonymous. Photo Lab is a clever app for disguising and smartening up your podcast artwork.

Create and publish your own podcast

Publish through WordPress

If you already run a blog or a website most hosts will offer podcast support. Some include this for free while others charge extra, but either way you potentially have the opportunity to merge the podcast into your site to create more content for your followers. WordPress is one such popular host that includes fairly simple podcast integration.

1 Set it up

Go to My Site(s)>Manage>Settings> Writing and scroll down until you see the ‘Podcasting’ section. Now click the ‘Set Up’ icon to begin the process.
