We can’t control every object in the frame when we snap a shot. Lamp posts can poke up from behind the subject’s head or unwanted people may ‘photo bomb’ the shot. Thanks to the Photos app’s Retouch tool we can relocate pixels from one part of the shot and place them over unwanted objects. In the past this tool only worked well with small objects such as spots and blemishes. Larger subjects were often replaced by a smudgy blocky blur. The updated Big Sur release of Photos uses machine learning (or AI) to help the Retouch tool understand more about the scene. It is now more successful at choosing appropriate pixels to replace unwanted objects, creating a more effective retouched image.
