Say hello to iPhone 12 – your new smartphone
Apple’s latest smartphones have finally arrived and there’s now more choice than ever
We had to wait patiently an extra month as the Coronavirus pandemic affected Apple’s supply chain, but the iPhone 12 was worth the wait. Step forward the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max. So, where do you start? Well, it’s probably best to look at what’s the same across the range. Firstly, the iPhone has a new look, or an old look if you can remember back to the beginning of the last decade. In a big step change, Apple has done away with the curved edges of its display and replaced it with a more rectangular look, harking back to the iPhone 4. This year’s colour palette features white, black, green, blue and Product RED for the mini, 12 and Pro, while the Pro Max gets exclusive Pacific Blue, gold, silver and graphite options.
One of the big marketing pushes since launch has all been about 5G. These are the iPhones that will support the superfast internet speed promised by 5G. Roll out is slow but iPhone 12 is future proofing itself. Superfast connection will be matched by superfast performance too. Each new iPhone features the A14 Bionic chip, which Apple is claiming is the fastest chip ever used in a smartphone. It’s quite the claim, but it’s been backed up in Geekbench benchmarking tests. This is the market leader for responsive use whatever need you have for a smartphone.
In a welcome update from last year, the whole iPhone 12 family sports OLED displays. In 2019, that privilege was only for the Pro models. OLED delivers brighter brights, darker blacks and higher resolution for everything you look at. All the displays are edge to edge too, which helps make the overall size of the devices smaller. So what’s different? The price obviously. The mini is the cheapest, starting at £699, while the Pro Max starts at £1,099. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that the bigger the display, the more expensive the iPhone will be. The mini is 5.4-inches, the 12 and 12 Pro measure 6.1-inches, and the Pro Max stands at a whopping 6.7-inches. Don’t rule out the mini for being too small though – in comparison, the iPhone 8 Plus was ‘only’ 5.5-inches.
