MEETING MISS TESCHMACHER
Ernie Magnotta chats with Valerie Perrine
Valerie Perrine has had quite an interesting life. A Texas native, young Valerie moved around a lot due to her father being a colonel in the US Army. Years later, she became a Las Vegas showgirl before falling into acting; a profession she would soon excel at.
Her first role was as soft-core porn actress Montana Wildhack in 1972’s Slaughterhouse-Five. However, her real breakthrough was playing opposite Dustin Hoffman as the wife of legendary comedian Lenny Bruce in director Bob Fosse’s Lenny (1974). For her magnificent performance as Honey Bruce, Valerie was not only nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, but she won a Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival as well. She also won three more awards for this role and was nominated for another three (including a Golden Globe).
Valerie would continue to shine in well-known movies such as Sydney Pollack’s 1979 film The Electric Horseman with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, and 1982’s The Border with Jack Nicholson and Harvey Keitel. She would also grace countless made-for-television films and TV episodes with her incredible acting talent.
But if there’s one role that Valerie will always be remembered for, it would have to be as super villain Lex Luthor’s smart-mouthed, sexy assistant Eve Teschmacher in the blockbuster classics Superman (1978) and Superman II (1981).
