BIG SCREEN COMPOSITING
Jesus Lavin, compositing supervisor at Image Engine, tells 3D World how Nuke powered the studio’s VFX work on Disney’s live-action Mulan
This shot from Disney’s Mulan provides a panoramic view of the desert garrison and its surroundings. The structure of the practical set was extended using CG for the walls, the barracks and the small markets inside the garrison, whereas the exterior environment was done with matte painting projections. We also added CG crowds and flags and enhanced the town with 2.5D smoke and dust projections. We pretty much added anything that would help us bring life to this place. The shot’s composition was done using Nuke 12, which has been the compositing package used at Image Engine for over a decade and since its early days, it has been the industry standard.
