Winter offers a selection of targets not just for the beginner to whet their stargazing appetite, but for seasoned sky-watchers to get truly stuck into a tour of the heavens. Mid-January through to February offers a selection of star clusters, galaxies and nebulae for those armed with or without an optical aid. These views compliment the readily available planets, which observers will see make their grand appearances at dusk and dawn through the coming weeks. A selection of galaxies, including the Cigar Galaxy (Messier 82) bursting with star formation in the constellation of Ursa Major, as well as Messier 106, Messier 94 and Messier 63 in Canes Venatici, and the star clusters of Gemini, Orion and Perseus, are also viewing delights.
