Harking back to when the Netherlands was a powerful player in the tea trade, this rare, early 18th century silver caddy attracted international interest at Halls (20% buyer’s premium) of Shrewsbury.
Made by Johannes van de Toorn, the founder of the prolific dynasty of silversmiths working in The Hague, the 3in (11.5cm) tall, 4.5oz caddy was marked B. 1724.
Given a £3000-5000 estimate at the Shropshire sale on March 21, it sold over the phone to a Dutch buyer at £7400.
