A large number of green-fingered enthusiasts gathered at the Brodick Golf Club last Friday for the annual sunflower competition which saw a large amount of entries.
Growing year on year, the competition is judged in two categories; the tallest and the Best in Show, as well as a booby prize for the entrant whose sunflower did not make the grade. Organiser, announcer and family relation of most of the entrants, Nicol Hume measured up more than 30 entries and in an informal and entertaining ceremony on the balcony of the golf club, awarded the prizes.
Taking first prize for the Best in Show, was the entry from club captain Lindsay Keir whose sunflower was applauded for its impressive girth. At 130 inches and taking the Tallest in Show award was Bill McNicol who has a long history of winning the title with his giant sunflower specimens that tower over the competition.
