Taking the plastic out of periods

Plastic - it packages our food, pollutes our oceans and it also finds its way into our monthly cycles. In fact, standard period products contain up to 90 per cent of the stuff, which as you can imagine spells terrible consequences for our planet - contributing to 200,000 tonnes of landfill waste every year. Ella Daish, was shocked by such stats and wanted to make a change - prompting her to start the campaign #EndPeriodPlastic which has received over 200,000 signatures. We caught up with her to find out more.

When I became aware of conventional period products containing so much plastic, I was horrified. These were the products I had been using for many years. I went into my local supermarket to get an alternative, but there was no choice, it was either plastic or plastic. This bugged me, because without a choice, how can we truly make a decision about what we buy? I switched to eco-friendly period products and thought someone else would probably do something about it. I kept going over it in my head; it just didn’t make sense, if small companies could make them without plastic, then so could the big brands. It really began to frustrate me and I knew I had to do something about it, to raise awareness and bring about change. The success of other online campaigns convinced me to take a stand against period plastic by starting my own petition in early 2018.
