SOMETIME IN MARCH Harriet’s fever broke. She got out of bed, changed her shirt, brushed her hair quickly, paddling static into the light thinning strands until they began to stand up and crackle. The snow had melted enough to reveal her muddy Jeep, chewed up by ice, salt, and rust, with a gas tank still full from months ago.
