The Old Spratt’s Factory
Built in 1890, this residential unit in a converted dog biscuit factory has been refurbished and is now a beautiful modern dwelling. Space Group Architects has transformed the space, which comprised the original grain and flour warehouse and two bakeries. The area is now a threebedroom family home, with a new layout to fit an additional bathroom and study. The double-height living area benefits from large arched windows, providing plenty of natural light. A galleried landing overlooks the main hub of the home and is made from the same steel as the renewed staircase – an important focal feature that underlines the industrial history of the building and maintains the factory’s character. The homeowners run Encore Reclamation (www.encorereclamation.co.uk) and so were able to source their own wooden floorboards and timber beams.
