Poignant return to favourite place

A reminiscence of George Townsley BEM 1929-2016

THE Glasgow Fair had once again arrived.

My dad, George Townsley, the manager of a Glasgow light engineering firm, is out early morning packing the car with the suitcase and, of course, his golf clubs. He picked up my grandpa and we were off.

No toilet or lunch stops en route – my dad would be booked on the first tee at Machrihanish for 1pm so it was full speed all the way and heaven help us if we got caught behind a bus at Loch Lomond.

To this day, I don’t know how we all managed to get in the car, a Wolseley Hornet, the size of an old Mini. But one thing was for sure: the golf clubs would never be left behind.
