Did you study art and design?

I studied for four years – two years in St Albans and two years at Croydon College.

College is great; it allows you to explore a range of creative avenues which can open up new doors that may have been closed. At Croydon, I also moved away from home for the first time and this probably had an even bigger impact on me, having to be more independent. Life experience really broadens your outlook and affects how you might process creative thoughts.

How did you end up designing for the music industry?

Music provided me with my first exposure to design as a tangible thing, through the record sleeves that I owned. At school, I dreamed about designing record covers, often creating alternatives for my favourites or redrawing the images from them. This led me to art college. When I left four years later, my college supplied a list of potential contacts, one of which was WEA in London. Luckily, there was a junior job vacancy in their design department and because a lot of my college work felt quite music-focused, I ended up getting the job.

The first examples credited to you are for Marc Almond in 1991–92, for the singles from his Tenement Symphony album.
