“It’s funny to think about it now because it was absurd…” Speaking to Classic Pop from Boston, Massachusetts, where she is now a respected academic at Berklee College Of Music, Susan Rogers is remembering her time as Prince’s full-time engineer from 1983 to 1987. “Prince could get a full night’s sleep in four or five hours. He was young, his brain was on fire with all the ideas that were coming and he didn’t sleep much, which meant that no one in his world slept much either. Anyone who was part of his recording life had to kind of be there all the time. If Prince was awake, he wanted to be making music and if he was making music he wanted to record it. Every day he did some kind of music making, I can’t think of a day when he didn’t. Whether we were at home, whether we were on tour, if we were out in LA at Sunset Sound, I was right there…”
Testament to this constant creation is the vast amount of previously unreleased material included in the forthcoming Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition boxset. The original double album is accompanied by a disc of B-sides and extended versions, two live discs recorded on the SOTT tour in Utrecht, plus three discs containing 45 previously unreleased outtakes, demos and alternate versions. As Duane Tudahl puts it to us on a call from Los Angeles: “The amount of stuff he was doing at the time was insane. He had ideas all the time, he was a faucet for ideas – non-stop.”
Tudahl works in the team led by estate manager Michael Howe, and together they compiled the boxset. “There is a group of us, and we talk about what would work. It was decided to do it in chronological order which allows Prince to speak through the order of what he did. When he would put an album together, he would decide on the order; we don’t have that luxury now.”
