Matthew Berinato
Tenille Townes is 24 (she turns 25 on 20 January), but at times she already seems like a veteran. As a girl growing up in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada she was “obsessed” with Shania Twain (“I knew all the words to each and every song”), but getting a guitar from her grandparents aged 14 and immediately writing her own songs saw her graduate to U2, Dolly Parton, Patty Griffin, Carolyn Dawn Johnson and Lori McKenna as touchstones for both songwriting and social concerns. She was nominated for a Canadian Country Music Award for Female Artist Of The Year at the age of 17, releasing two domestic LPs, Real and Light.
