5 TRY MACRO FOR AMAZING INSECT CLOSE-UP PHOTOS
Turn your camera towards butterflies, damselflies, dragonflies and other pollinators
Winged insects such as butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies make for superb close-up shots, preferably taken with a macro lens, though you could use the reversing ring technique (see page 55), extension tubes or close-up filters, all of which allow a standard lens to focus closer and are ideal for shooting macro on a tight budget.
Avoiding the frost by hibernating over winter, these winged warriors reappear as early as March and can be seen until around October and November in autumn. For more guaranteed sightings, you could visit a polytunnel, such as this one at the Sussex Butterfly Gardens, near Burgess Hill, where you can see them all year round. You could also try to tempt winged insects such as butterflies to your garden by planting flowers that provide nectar for them to feed on, or by leaving out fallen fruit, such as pears and apples.
