Videogames often have the quality of a palimpsest. Look carefully enough and you can spot vestiges of what has gone before. Sometimes those remnants reveal the tastes of the designers, references – conscious or otherwise – of older games they have played and loved. And sometimes they come in the form of digital remains: particularly when it comes to sequels, you can detect examples where existing code has been reused or repurposed, assets and animations that have been recycled.
