FamilySearch future plans

Following the recent news that FamilySearch discontinued its microfilm distribution service in September 2017, as a volunteer at and a patron of Family History Centers (FHCs) for research in British, Irish, Canadian and American records for the past quarter of a century, it seemed to me that the immediate and complete discontinuation of the distribution of microfilm and microfiche, although well-intentioned, could precipitate a number of problems. The rationale for the discontinuation is:

1 The present microfilm/fiche copying and distribution service has become increasingly costly (parts for the microfilm readers; raw microfilm is no longer available at an affordable cost; the cost of shipping microfilm/fiche).

2 Over 50 per cent of European records have already been digitised, and they are, or soon will be, available at FHCs at no cost to patrons. Digitisation of the remaining records should be completed ‘…within the next two or three years’.

3 All microfilm/fiche requested before 1 September 2017 will, if necessary, be duplicated and distributed to the designated FHCs, which will be able to keep them indefinitely.
