Variant spelling

A variant spelling in family history typically refers to the spelling of a forename or surname. It wasn’t unusual for a first name or surname to change during the course of a lifetime, perhaps to help someone fit into a new country after emigrating or when an ancestor used a nickname in place of their given name. Also, spelling variants can occur within documents when the person recording the information either misheard or misspelt the name.
