Galway, Ireland. Find out how to research your Irish roots at the National University of Ireland’s (NUI Galway) Irish Ancestry Summer School. The five-day course will outline the origins of people in Ireland and trace the development of society on the island to the present day, with special emphasis on the West of Ireland. Participants will learn how to research their own family history and have the opportunity of giving a DNA sample to find out about their origins. There will be field trips plus lectures on ancient DNA studies, prehistoric demographics, early tribal groupings, later medieval clan history, postmedieval lifeways, history and genealogy given by some of Ireland’s leading scholars.

4 July Lecture

Cambridgeshire. Dr Nick Barratt will be giving a lecture on Family History in the 21st Century – Behind the Scenes at Who Do You Think You Are? at Peterborough Family History Society (FHS). Dr Barratt – original consultant and lead researcher when the hit BBC show launched in 2004 – explores the impact of the series on modern family history, along with the rise of the internet as the place to trace your roots. Using examples from the series, he takes the audience behind the scenes to highlight how research takes place, with an emphasis on storytelling and the importance of thinking about the forgotten lives of our ancestors – and how they remain relevant today.
