You’re one of a small number of footballers to have played in all four divisions – which step up did you find most difficult?
Stepping up to the Premier League was the most difficult for me. I couldn’t comprehend the pace, how quick everyone was and how quickly the ball was moved around the pitch. It was a massive eye-opener for me. It took me a little time to adapt, and I had doubts about myself. I lost weight when I played at Sunderland, not through worry but because the training was much faster and the games were so intense. It was bloody tough.
