A bridge humbucker would be a good place to start in emulating the sounds of both Butler and Oakes. However, you can also get great results from a single-coil, especially for some of the more jangly arpeggio sequences. Use the above settings as a start, add ing flanger and also some fuzz for various sections. As an alternaive to the fuzz, simply crank the gain up to 8.
[Bars 1-8]We kick off this month’s piece with an idea ending with a single-note lick over the chords Am, F and G. It can be fun and creative taking simple chords and removing or adding fingers to create different sounds. A flanger is used to add another texture to the overdriven guitar tone. A different approach to playing these chords is used in bars 9-12 using higher voicings.
