When it comes to packing the most exercise punch into a lunch break, lots of us are pretty clueless. And now, with the added challenge of limited gym access, it’s harder than ever to know whether our efforts are really helping us reach our fitness goals.
The good news is, mastering calorie burn is actually pretty simple – whatever your fitness level. ‘When exercising, an effective calorie burn will depend on the consumption of oxygen. Essentially, the more oxygen consumed during exercise, the higher the calorie burn will be,’ says Sean Johnson BSc, Head Trainer at Orangetheory Fitness, Bromley.
‘As long as you get that heart rate up for long enough for the body to start working aerobically, that’s when more calories will be burnt.’ But it doesn’t stop once your trainers come off. ‘If you exercise with your heart rate at a particular level for a certain period, your body will experience excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), an after-burn effect. This means that even after you’ve finished working out, your body is still using oxygen, so calories continue being burnt.’
