On 2 January 1492, the Andalusian city of Granada fell to Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile – extinguishing the last vestiges of Islamic rule on the Iberian Peninsula. !is was the final act of the Reconquista, the Christian ‘reconquest’ of what is now Spain and Portugal from Muslim overlordship – a struggle of intermittent skirmishes that had endured for the best part of 800 years.
