The archives contain more than a century of girlguiding papers and memorabilia
Girlguiding is the UK’s largest girl-only youth organisation and since 1910 has brought together girls of various ages and backgrounds who, through a programme of regular meetings and special events, take part in activities, undergo challenges and work towards badges.
The first guide company officially registered in Scotland was the 1st Peebles on 26 February 1910 and these girls met at Venlaw castle. The archive includes registration books from the first years of guiding in Scotland onwards and holds a copy of the first guide handbook, How Girls Can Help Build Up The Empire. This publication was written by Agnes Baden- Powell, sister of scouting founder Lord Baden Powell. It includes instructions on how to tie-up a burglar using eight inches of cord!
