One of the main things family historians want to be able to do is to find out where their ancestor was buried and discover whether there is a gravestone. As secretary of the Scottish Association of Family History Societies (SAFHS), the majority of enquiries I receive concern burial records.
The SAFHS website www.safhs.org.uk/burialgrounds.asp lists all of Scotland’s known burial grounds, both those still in use and those no longer used for burials. Having found out the name of the cemetery or graveyard your ancestor was laid to rest, you need to check whether the monumental inscriptions have been recorded. The Scottish Genealogy Society has the biggest collection of monumental inscriptions in Scotland, both published and unpublished and also sells CDs and books for monumental inscriptions for either individual cemeteries or for entire counties: www.scotsgenealogy.com
