A question I often get asked is: ‘What plumbing work can I undertake on my build project without a professional?’ Recent events have no doubt compounded this - some people have been left wondering how to constructively fill the time during lockdown, or indeed may now have a great big hole in the budget that somehow needs to be filled. And what better way than doing it yourself?

At this point, it’s worth mentioning the project management triangle. There are a few versions of this, but this is a simple one I like. It has three corners: time, cost and quality. You can achieve two but not all three. For example, if you want to save costs, it will either take longer or the quality is not what it could be. Important finishes are often best left to those with experience, but if you do want to have a go, then please practice first. A good tradesperson has had many years of experience and can make some tricky jobs look deceptively easy.
