As of 1 July 2021, horses competing in FEI competitions must have their whiskers left intact. The ruling has come into effect following veterinary advice that the trimming or shaving of hairs around a horse’s muzzle and eyes can reduce his sensory ability. Horses who’ve had these hairs removed for veterinary purposes will be exempt from the rule, but thereafter any offending combination will be disqualified from competition, and riders could be subject to heavier sanctions.
