Summer 2024 has been a difficult one in which to be an equestrian. There’s been so much to be proud of in the sport we love, but also many difficult conversations and upsetting times. I’m sure you’ve felt it keenly, just as the team at Horse&Rider has. But if changes to the horse sport make it more equine-centric and improve welfare, then they can’t come too soon. And, in the meantime, we will continue to educate ourselves – and share that learning with you – to make sure we’re all developing our knowledge and becoming the best riders and carers of our incredible four-legged friends that we possibly can be. They deserve no less because they give us everything so wholeheartedly.

In this issue of Horse&Rider, Nicola Wilson shares her tips for your first cross-country session – her advice will help build your horse’s confidence, instil good habits and, importantly, make training fun. But if the concept of cross-country is one your horse is already familiar with, check out Laura Collett’s ultimate guide to jumping skinnies to learn how you can refine your skills. By following her step-by-step process, you’ll be set up to tackle them confidently every time.

As we head into winter, our horses often start to spend more time indoors which ultimately increases the risk of respiratory problems developing. Fortunately, there’s a number of simple things we can do to minimise the adverse effects of stabling – vet Hayley Chidlow explains all.

Whether you’re after new riding kit, functional country wear to take you from the high street to the yard, replacements for your trusty wellies, or the latest riding hat, we've got something for everyone in our Gear Guide magazine, free with this issue.

Plus, don’t miss an extract from John Whitaker’s biography! Discover more about the horse who kicked off his incredible career and some of the most special moments along the way.

All this and so much more in the November issue of Horse&Rider, on sale now!

UK's top equestrian Mag

UK's best-selling equestrian monthly Recensito 13 agosto 2020

Best horse mag ever

Just bought some back issues and a subscription. Used to buy it from the feed barn. Really like the way I can access the old issues whenever I like, and it is so quick to open. And this is the best all round read for me. Recensito 16 luglio 2013
