A funny thing happened this month. Playing dad taxi to my daughter and a gaggle of her friends, I happened to be playing Green Day’s seminal American Idiot album on the car stereo when, during Dearly Beloved (the fourth part of the ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ suite), they mistook the ‘tings’ on the track to be the ‘ting’ of a new message arriving on their iPhones and, in unison, held their devices aloft to check. This happened several times, each time their faces were illuminated by their screens a split second apart in the darkness in a scene not unlike a certain Queen video. It goes to show that there is a distinct lack of personalisation in alert sounds and ringtones these days – something we look to address on page 76.
