Spare the rod… Love the child

JOHN FINNIE and I bumped into each other in the tunnels under Murrayfield Stadium during the recent tenancy by Hearts, the football club we both support. The Highlands Green MSP had just received the welcome news that the Scottish Government would be giving a fair wind to his Bill banning physical punishment of children and I was shaking his hand in congratulation.

The Daily Mail and the pro-smacking lobby were busy painting Finnie as a liberal elite weirdo at the cutting edge of the Nanny State, meddling with the right of decent parents to discipline their children. In fact he is much more rounded than that caricature, a real-life Hamish Macbeth with a genuine belief that if human rights mean anything they have to include rights for small humans.
