Catherine de’ Medici was born in Florence seven years after her family’s return from their exile by Charles ‘the Affable’ of France – who died tragically in 1498 after banging his head on a doorway at the Château d’Amboise, which was where he’d been born, so you’d have thought he’d know his way about the place, but never mind; that’s a different story.
Tragedy plus time equals comedy, so we shouldn’t feel too guilty if we titter a little at the slapstick nature of poor Charles’s demise, but there were other deaths in the story of Catherine that still don’t seem funny. Lots of them. Let’s start with the first two: her parents.
