Endless is the first street artist to be exhibited at the Uffizi
In something of a departure from the Renaissance collections for which it is famous, Florence’s Uffizi Gallery recently acquired a work by British street artist Endless. The gallery unveiled the self-portrait by the UK-based artist in February, and it will be the first piece by a street artist to be displayed in the museum. The portrait –a montage featuring two images of the artist with his face hidden by a reworking of a Calvin Klein underwear advert – is a comment on consumer culture and advertising. Endless, whose real name is unknown, said he was “excited and honoured” to see his work included among the museum’s treasures, while the Uffizi’s director, Eike Schmidt, claims that he plans to add more street art to the gallery’s collection in the future.
