Tara Roskell Face in the Sun, collage and Lyra Aquacolor in Moleskine watercolour sketchbook, 81⁄4x5in. (21x13cm). Try using collage and work over the top with watersoluble pastels; you could also use paint. Don’t be afraid to experiment in your sketchbook, no one else has to see it unless you want them to.
Sandra Busby Fish Out of Water, oil on stretched canvas, 24x36in. (61x91.5cm). ‘I’d always liked the idea of painting bubbles, but I wanted to add a little interest and humour to the mix. And so came the fish! Despite the simplicity of the subject, composition played a very important part in this painting. The painting was built up largely of transparent layers This allowed me to overlay gentle sheens and subtle colours without obliterating what was underneath’
As a creative person you will probably be all too familiar with the frustrations that often come with it. There is nothing more you would like to do than to sit down and pick up your pencils, but somehow life has a habit of getting in the way. You find that you simply don’t have time to draw and on the few occasions that you do, you have no idea what to draw. When you finally pick up that pencil, it feels completely alien.
