Kernel Watch
Jon Masters keeps an eye out for all the latest happenings in the Linux kernel, so you don’t have to.
Linus Torvalds has announced that Linux 6.1 would be one of those rare kernel development cycles in which an RC8 (Release Candidate 8) would be required prior to the final release, rather than the usual 7. He began to consider this at RC5, saying, “If things don’t start calming down, this may be one of those releases that need an extra week.” And by RC7, which came over US Thanksgiving, Linus had made the call. Linus said “this means I will be more hard-nosed than usual” in terms of enforcing that patches must be sent on time. “If I get sent pull requests later, I’ll just go, ‘This can wait.’ OK?”
