OUR EXPERT
W hether it’s a cool desktop effect, cleverly designed application or a bizarre problem to be solved, we all have had to capture screenshots at one time or another. Most desktop distributions feature a default screenshot utility, and you have the choice of several more in your software repositories. More often than not, though, the default screenshot utility is limited to capturing either the entire desktop, the active window or a portion of the screen. But what if you could do all three and, more importantly, create a screencast recording of your screen – and all from the comfort of the CLI?
Written in Rust and released under the GPLv3 licence, Menyoki bills itself as a screenshot, screencast utility that can also perform myriad image-related tasks, such as creating GIFs and breaking a GIF into individual files, as well as modifying, analysing and viewing image files.
What makes Menyoki stand out is its ability to create a GIF recording of on-screen activities, as well as turn a series of images, such as photos taken on holiday, into a GIF file. You can also break down an animation into individual files, and the tool can double as an image viewer. Menyoki also supports a large number of popular file formats, such as GIF, PNG, JPEG, MP4, BMP, TIFF and more.
