Holing up for the weekend in Hampshire
Though this cosy red-brick inn has serviced weary travellers since the 15th century, contemporary visitors can expect more than a bed for the night and a fagon of ale. Boutique hotel chain Bel & The Dragon has carefully restored Kingsclere’s village pub, The Swan, retaining the property’s exposed-beams-andbricks period charm while adding some essential ingredients for a weekend away. Food – from the devilled crab salad to rotisserie-cooked suckling pig – is outstanding, and served in a restaurant so inviting you’ll fnd hours slip by unnoticed. After dining freside, repair to the drawing room, where guests can help themselves to board games and brandy in cut-glass decanters. Stylish touches like this are everywhere: Roberts radios in the rooms, beds draped with soft tartan blankets, intriguing drawings hung on the walls. Friendly staff keenly facilitate your decadent leisure, and will whisk up an espresso martini or a Bloody Mary at a moment’s notice.
