here is a saying that the arrival of the car freed the horse. That rather than threaten the existence of the all-important horse, the ability of the car to take over so much effort meant that horses got be for pleasure, and didn’t have to spend their time working. At least, I think there’s a saying about this. I remember one of the guys on Top Gear saying that it was a saying, but I can’t find any evidence of it. But it always stuck with me as an idea: that something that seems to replace something else isn’t necessarily bad for the thing being replaced. Sometimes it’s an opportunity.
