JUST AS I was putting this issue of Mac|Life to bed, satisfied with the way it was looking, at the last minute Apple goes ahead and announces new products due to be launched just a day later.
Interestingly, back when we were a print–first title, this would have been a non–issue. Even if my publisher would have allowed me an extension on my deadline, the news would have still been massively out of date by the time it hit the shelves, compared with news sites online, that is. But now that we’re a digital–only title, things are a little bit easier. Getting an extension is straightforward, as there is no valuable print slot to carefully manage, and it means that when Mac|Life does go on sale just a week later after it’s been put to bed, the content is much more timely. Naturally, we’re never going to trouble online news outlets which are able to get the content out there within minutes of it being announced, but then again they’re never going to trouble the high–quality, carefully curated nature of magazines. So there. Plus, I figure that a decent number of people reading magazines are a little more relaxed about what’s going on in life, and probably aren’t desperate to have the latest Apple news instantly beamed to their iPhones.
