Typical. Just a few days before going to press, Apple announced its September Apple Special Event. Normally, it would have just sneaked into the calendar for this October on-sale issue, but possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was a week later than usual. At the time of writing, the rumors suggest the possibility of a new Apple Watch - Series 6 (the event tagline is “Time Flies” which could be the giveaway, or perhaps it’s more to do with the year flying by due to everyone focusing on coronavirus all of the time). There’s also talk of an iPad of some description - maybe a new iPad Air with an edge-to-edge display to help boost sales of the non-Pro models. The iPhone 12 was also on the cards, but it’s looking increasingly likely this will be saved for a standalone event in October - not surprising given there are supposed to be four models to showcase. Whatever happens, we should be able to bring you all the details in the next issue, so look out for that one - it’ll be big.
In the meantime, let’s focus on the tangible and what we can actually see and do right now. The main focus for this issue - as if you hadn’t noticed by the giant 14 on the front cover - is iOS 14. Hopefully you’ve already checked out coverage of the new OS for iPhone (and iPod) from a previous issue of Mac|Life, so I don’t need to convince you of how impressive it looks, or waffle about how it’s going to change the world. But with the new version now out to download and install, you’ve probably already gone ahead and upgraded, so you’ll be wondering exactly what you can do with it. If so, head over to page 10 where we’ll show you everything in our complete guide to iOS 14. The good news right off the bat, if you were wondering, is that if you were using the previous version before, then iOS 14 will work with your device - there’s a full list in the feature, though, if you’re not sure.
