The most interesting aspect of Dieth’s debut is hearing bassist Dave Ellefson (ex-Knight Fury, The Alien Blakk, Killing Machine and others – HA!) embark on some of the most diverse and heaviest material since Megadeth’s early days. Joined by former members of Entombed A.D. and Decapitated, To Hell And Back spans a spectrum: from the bluesy radio rock/ Swedeath shuffle of Heavy Is The Crown and lighters aloft-worthy ballad Walk With Me Forever through to Dead Inside’s Bay Area bashing and the title track’s flirtation with antiseptic tech death. The members’ diverse backgrounds and sonic interests make it a struggle to determine Dieth’s direction, but it’s encouraging to hear veterans expanding their palettes and their reach. ■■■■■■■■■■
