Scandinavian wunderkinds Kalandra’s new album is perhaps less immediate than their 2020 debut, The Line, but no less gratifying. Shapeshifting between acoustic murmurs, alt pop surge and lofty prog metal, A Frame Of Mind unspools like a gauzily immersive dream. Vocalist Katrine Stenbekk is gifted with an incredible voice, but also a knack for ensuring her virtuoso performance seems effortless and unshowy. From wistful, folky moments recalling the likes of Ida and Nina Nastasia to the undulating, Eastern-tinged riffing of Bardaginn, everything seems to occupy its natural place. The musical evolution is impressive but also fitting, mirroring as it does themes of personal growth and the quest for meaning. ■■■■■■■■
