Scales: Lots!
The station at Kilmarnock dates from 1846 and the town is the home of Scotland’s railways, with the first railway in Scotland between Kilmarnock to Troon opening in 1812. The famous locomotive builders Andrew Barclay & Sons (now Brodies Engineering) still operate nearby. The main station building is broadly L-shaped and contains a number of rooms, both on the lower level and at platform level. These have remained unused for many years until a small group got together and decided to form a trust to bring the rooms back into community use. In 2014 a charity was set up called Kilmarnock Station Railway Heritage Trust to bring rooms at Kilmarnock Railway Station back to community use. The name given to the project was ‘Kilmarnock Station Community Village’.
