Iam very glad that controversy now rages over F1 racing in countries with a record of human rights abuses. To some extent I can see both sides: I do hear, and join the cry for a ‘politics-free return to the purity of the sport’ in these times of ‘penalty pandemic’. But this, in my view, is not a political issue. It’s a humanitarian one. Just because I have been an F1 fan since the day Stirling Moss crashed in 1962 does not make me immune to suffering. I am a human being first and a petrolhead second. No one on Earth has a right to oppress another, and turning a blind eye is, in my view, to be complicit.
