THE shepherds have had their hand-shears out clipping a few stragglers that evaded us at the main gather as we have had the ewes and lambs in again for weaning. All lambs were looking well and this year, as I said last month, they seemed to have been less affected by Plochteach (yellowses).
We also profited from the warm weather last week to finish our silage. We managed to make just under 400 bales, which will go a long way towards feeding our cows this winter.
We will be getting it analysed in the next few weeks to assess its quality. This will tell us how much concentrate we will need to feed the cows along with the silage to meet their dietary requirements. This year we have all our own equipment for silage, so were able to do most of it ourselves. This greatly helped, apart from when the baler broke down and we had to get the contractors in.
