Safe and secure – at home and on line
When it comes to security, is complacency the biggest crime?
ARGYLL FIRE&SAFETY
Expert advice and service to keep you safe
When is a fire extinguisher not a fire extinguisher? When it hasn’t been serviced and maintained properly.
‘It is the most common mistake people make both in business and in the home,’ said Kenny McGillivray of Argyll Fire and Safety, ‘that and having the wrong type of extinguisher for the fire. Use a water extinguisher on an electrical fire and you run the risk of electrocution.’ Go and look at the service sticker on the back of your fire extinguishers; if it is 12 months out of date then they might not work if needed in an emergency. The probability increases with time. By law there should be an annual service by a qualift ed engineer.
Kenny and apprentice Donald Ross are a regular sight on the roads and ferries of Argyll and Bute and even farther afield in the ‘safety car’, their fully-kitted-out van.
‘I say we go from the Isle of Iona to Hamilton,’ said Kenny. ‘Businesses and landlords, large or small, know we can provide a complete service: fire risk assessment, keeping them up to date with the legislation and making sure their fire extinguishers and all equipment is regularly serviced as it should be, by trained, competent engineers from a conscientious company.’
