Welcome

David Alderton

It’s very obvious that we’re currently living through incredibly strange times, unlike anything that any of us have experienced before. Covid-19 has caused unparalleled disruption to our daily lives with most countries around the world now having imposed lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus as much as possible. As animal keepers, we are perhaps more used than most to the need for frequent hand-washing which is so vital, and using alcohol hand gel. Now everyone must do so.

A sense of helpless, combined with the feeling of isolation, cut off from friends and family, only heightens the stress, even for those that remain healthy. We worry too about the future. What is the endgame? How do we get out of this situation: how long will it take to develop an effective vaccine?

Being confined at home for weeks, especially if you do not have access to a garden, soon loses its appeal especially as summer approaches. But those of us with pets are fortunate. Numerous studies have revealed how even under the most adverse circumstances, pets can benefit us, helping to overcome negative feelings, and keeping us in touch with the wider natural world.
