GREEN LIGHT
SHEFFIELD Greens must be feeling off colour. The typically tree-hugging councillors have enraged residents by backing plans to bulldoze the green belt. Sheffield has earmarked 14 such sites in its draft local plan (which outlines development strategy), lining up land, including four farms, on which to build 3,500 homes, schools, industrial units and a cemetery. No single party controls Sheffield, but Labour, Greens and Lib Dems initially all supported the project before the latter voted against. The 14 Greens, stood their, er, ground, arguing that rejecting the plan would make “unplanned development” on any part of the green belt – rather than approved areas – more likely.
