For the 100th time… When it comes to celebrating, I tend to shy away from a big, noisy fireworks display and prefer a more sedate a air where I get to hang out with my favourite people, eat cake and make a quiet toast. We invite you to celebrate quietly with us this month. (Well, you can do it loudly if you want.) At Psychologies, we tend to celebrate when others wouldn’t. We like to celebrate the courage to try – the process, not the results – and to have a toast at the pit-stops along the way, not just at the finish line. We believe it’s not about what you achieve that will make the difference between a happy life and a miserable one, but rather having the courage to get it wrong, to give it a go, to engage in life instead of standing on the sidelines waiting until the conditions are right. Being brave enough to fail – we think that’s worth celebrating. At the end of 2013, we invite you to take your own pit-stop and review your year: celebrate the small stuff , the messy bits and the life lessons you learned along the way. They may be things that others might not have noticed but have made all the difference to your quality of life, to the way you think, live and breathe. In our Dossier this month (page 28), we asked five writers to do the same and their essays make inspiring and moving reading. Having said all that, we’re not only celebrating the small stuff this month, but something big. It’s our birthday. We are 100 issues old. For the past month, our office has looked like something out of Blue Peter as our team cut and pasted words of wisdom from the last 100 issues, stuck them on the wall with sticky back plastic and then we all got to vote on our favourites. I was struck when I read them through how many ofthe ones we liked aren’t about doing something differently (although there are a few of those) but about love, acceptance and being the person you want to be.
